Gurveer Sira
Born in the U.K but raised in Kenya.
His introduction to photography began as a child when he picked up his father’s old Minolta film camera. In the age of film cameras, it was important to ensure all settings were correct because you could only see the final image long after taking the photograph. Gurveer enjoyed experimenting with these settings and making notes, which helped him to hone his photography skills. As a tribute to that era of his life, he has kept all of his film pictures.
He then transitioned to a Kodak digital camera, next a Canon DSLR, and he now uses the latest mirrorless technology from Canon.
In addition to his photography, Gurveer has also been passionate about wildlife from a young age. He spent his childhood camping in Kenya’s Maasai Mara and his fondest memories are of its beautifully remote Sand River area. Always ready for an outdoor adventure, he is now the go-to amongst his friends and family to spearhead a camping trip to one of Kenya’s many natural wonders, with all the proper gear in tow.
Stemming from this appreciation for nature, he is a strong advocate for conservation groups and uses his photography as a medium to educate those who have never had the privilege to go on safari. He wants others to understand the need to protect wildlife and their habitats, so that future generations are able to experience it in reality — not just simply gaze upon still photographs.
At the heart of his photography is Gurveer’s desire to inspire his audience, even if just a small percentage, to take an interest in wildlife and conservation. He strives for each photograph to convey the same excitement that he feels when he captures the moment and to tell a story about that moment in time.
Gurveer prefers to showcase his photographs in black and white because the final impression is powerfully timeless, though some color does feature across his collections. He hopes that his photography will take him to other parts of the world, including other parts of the African continent, India, Siberia, and anywhere else wildlife may be calling to him. He has shared what he sees from behind the lens by enlarging his photographs to hang around the house for his loved ones, and now actively works with clients to select the right portfolio piece, size, and print style that best suits them.
